A selection of the more popular disciplines shot at Pickering.

F-class rifle

F- class shooting is one of the fastest growing rifle shooting disciplines & both F- open & F T/R are shot at Pickering with equal popularity. The ‘F’ stands for George Farquharson who initiated this form of shooting about 15 years ago when he could no longer shoot off the elbows with iron sights. F-open is any calibre up to 8mm with F T/R limited to .223REM & .308Win. Rifles use a telescopic sight & a front support with a rear bag. Targets are half the size of  those used for target rifle. The club holds competitions throughout the year at Pickering, Strensall Ranges &  Bisley Camp shooting from 300 up to 1000 yards.
Target Rifle (TR) has it’s roots in the founding of the current NRA (National Rifle Association) in 1860. It is the main discipline controlled by the NRA & has a worldwide following, particularly in Commonwealth countries. Palma Rifle is very similar & is also international with a strong participation of the USA. TR kit consists of a target rifle, maximum weight 6.5 kgs, calibre .308, maximum bullet weight 156 grains with a minimum trigger pull of 1.5 kgs & equipped with  aperture sights. The rifle is supported by a sling & the shooter who makes use of a  spotting scope to score the target. TR is shot in the prone position at distances up to 1000 yards & there are many competitions held throughout the year, the ultimate being the Imperial held at Bisley Camp every July.
